Price war starts in entry level hatchback segment as Renault launches Kwid
French automaker Renault has virtually started a price war in the entry level hatchback segment by launching its SUV-styled entry level hatch back, Kwid. The car has been aggressively priced at 2.56 lakh, ex-showroom, to pose a challenge to current market leaders in the segment, namely Maruti Suzuki's Alto and Hyundai's Eon.

Considering that Alto is priced at 2.89 lakh, Kwid has been priced 30,000 lower than its closest rival Alto and 54,000 lower than the Hyundai Eon. It is not only the aggressive pricing which will be a game changer for Renault, but introduction of high-end features in the top end model, which were unheard of in this segment.

Kwid's top end model will have a 7-inch touch-screen, Media-Nav system, digital instrument cluster, one-touch lane changer indicator, and will be offered for 3.53 lakh ex-showroom, which no other manufacturer is offering at the moment.

Renault is slowly, but steadily making inroads into the India auto market with its unique offerings and aggressive pricing. With this pricing structure, Renault expects to sell 50,000 units each moth initially, as per Sumit Swahney, country chief executive officer and managing director, Renault India Operations.
