AMU's vice-chancellor has agreed to hold the election in January. The demand of students is that the elections to other statutory bodies such as AMU court should also be held simultaneously which was not agreed by the vice-chancellor.
ALIGARH MUSLIM university is facing a dharna of students in front of vice-chancellor's lodge for more than two months that has been constantly calling for the restoration of students' union. Union minister of HRD had earlier asked all central universities to hold the elections of students union as soon as possible. In the case of AMU it was asked to hold the elections in November. However, no university apart from Allahabad and BHU have shown any interest in MHRD's advice.

In fact the vacancy for members to executive council from lecturers constituency are lying vacant since January 2010. There are charges of corruption levelled against the vice-chancellor by eight executive council members and a visitorial enquiry is going on. There is a raging controversy over opening of centers of AMU in far flung places as Murshidabad in Bengal and Mallapuram in Kerala. Apparently, a number of Muslim ministers have apprised the prime minister to intervene as these controversies may affect the Muslim votes to congress in coming elections.
