The National Commission for Women, concerned over the increasing number of such fraudulent marriages by NRI, has strongly advocated the framing of legislation to address issues such as maintenance of spouse, child custody and settlement of property.
AS A step against fraudulent marriages by non-resident Indians (NRI), where the young girls after being married are being duped by these NRIs, Vayalar Ravi, Overseas Indian Affairs Minister has launched an awareness programme in Punjab.
Punjab has the maximum number of victims where the girls are lured by NRIs into the wedlock for getting dowry and once their visit visa expires they don’t have any legal status to stay in the foreign country and are forced to return to India.
The National Commission for Women, concerned over the increasing number of such marriages, has strongly advocated the framing of legislation to address issues such as maintenance of spouse, child custody and settlement of property and also urged the External Affairs Ministry to ask the Indian Embassies to sensitise the Home Department of Foreign countries on the issues regarding dowry demands and other problems faced by women.
