The President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, while greetings countrymen in his message released by PIB on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti being celebrated today, April 13, said, "Lord Mahavira?s message of peace and non-violence has enriched our cultural heritage. May his noble teachings continue to inspire us. Let us imbibe his teachings of right faith, right knowledge and right conduct. Let us promote peace by unwaveringly following the path of righteous action."
The Vice President M. Hamid Ansari, in his message urged countrymen to commit to right belief, right knowledge and right conduct in order to build a non-violent and compassionate world. ?I convey my warm greetings and good wishes to the citizens of our country on the auspicious occasion of Mahavir Jayanti," he added.
Greeting the people on the auspicious occasion of Mahavir Jayanti, the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh said that Lord Mahavir?s message of ahimsa and kindness to all nature?s creations is very relevant in today?s world. His philosophy of contentment and being one with nature as against competing with it is equally timeless, he added. Here is a famous saying of Lord Mahavir on non-violence, ?The essence of all knowledge consists in not committing violence. The doctrine of ahimsa is nothing but the observance of equality i.e. the realization that just as I do not like misery, others also do not like it. Knowing this, one should not kill anybody. Just as you do not like misery, in the same way others also do not like it. Knowing this, you should do unto them what you want them to do unto you. To kill any living being amounts to killing one self. Compassion to others is compassion to one's own self.?
