Promotion of Ayurvedic medicine system backed with scientific reasons can put India on world map: DG Health Services
India can lead the world by promoting its ancient and preventive system of ayurvedic medicine duly backed by scientific reasons which can put us on the global map just like yoga, a top Union Health Ministry official said at an event organised by industry body ASSOCHAM in New Delhi today.
"Our own system which has been prevailing since thousands of years can put a great impact in the world and people can be prevented from many dreaded diseases, treatment of which otherwise costs very high," said Dr Jagdish Prasad, Director General of Health Services in Ministry of Health and Family Welfare while inaugurating a preventive healthcare awareness programme titled 'Illness to Wellness.'

According to a ASSOCHAM statement he also said that, his department has advised the Government to promote use of vaccines to prevent serious diseases.

Talking about plans of the Government with regards to healthcare promotion across India,

Dr Prasad informed, "The Government of India has recently taken a pilot project in 30 districts where we are posting all homeopathic and ayurvedic doctors in sub-centres at every 5,000 people to teach them about benefits of healthy lifestyle couple with proper diet."

"With this concept we are going to study how this preventive approach can help us," he added.

He also said that in the 12th plan the Government's high focus is on non-communicable diseases like diabetes, hypertension, cancer, obstructed lung disease and others which kill about 53 per cent of population. "Most of these diseases are preventive."

Earlier, in his address at the ASSOCHAM programme, Dr Mahesh Chandra Misra, director, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) lauded the Prime Minister, Mr Narendra Modi's Swacch Bharat Abhiyan.

"Swachh Bharat Abhiyan initiated by the PM will go a long way and doctors have liked it the most as he has made the doctors' job much easier by emphasising upon importance of hand hygiene," said Dr Misra.

The AIIMS director said that India needs to focus on prevention of diseases which must be given more preference as it is much less expensive than treating the disease.

"Healthy lifestyle is the key to success and it must begin from the childhood," said Dr Misra. "Schools across India must ban sale of junk food."

He also complained that every disease in India is under reported.
