South Africa after being routed at the hands of Sri Lanka, has defeated New Zealand with five wickets on Thursday. Winning the match against New Zealand, South Africa stays in contention of reaching the Champions Trophy semifinals.
AFTER BEING routed at the hands of Sri Lanka, South Africans needed something extra against New Zealand to sat alive in Champions trophy.
That extra came from their rookie fast bowler Wayne Parnell, whose career best spell of 5-57 had New Zealanders bundled out for a mediocre 214. For the second time, Graeme Smith after winning the toss decided to chase and he could not have asked for a better start when Parnell stuck his first of five wickets in the form of Jessie Ryder, courtesy an awesome catch by Van De Merwe in the fourth over.
Brendon McCullum on the other hand, was looking auspicious with Guptill unfolding his array of shots. Parnell stuck again in the 13th over by dismissing Martin Guptill. Ross Taylor started off cautiously and later with Grant Elliot played out the spinners in a slow and cautious manner. But Van de Merwe got the proteas right on track with two successive wickets of Elliot and Broom exposing the weak middle order yet again. Ross Taylor tried his best to amass runs but he was running out of partners and finally New Zealand ended up making 214 all out from a rather healthy position of 163-4.
In reply, South Africans lost their captain to a very soft dismissal, when the score was 22 in the sixth over. But, demise of the captain brought in the most experienced player, Jacques Kallis and he displayed his A class performance taking on Shane Bond to every corner of the park. Kallis’ enterprising innings of 38 came to an end when he guided a Bond leg cutter to the hands of wicketkeeper McCullum.
On the other side, Hashim Amla was playing the role of a sheet anchor and slowly and steadily with De Villers they got South Africa to a strong position. De Villers had a point to prove after his poor show in the first match and he played some exquisite drives coupled with excellent running between the wickets. Captain Daniel Vettori who got the breakthrough trapping Amla leg before wickets and when Tuffey got Duminy packing, the game was on. Boucher had other plans as his run a ball 28 pulled the game away from the Kiwis and South Africans lived to fight another day.
