PROTESTS AND clashes erupted in Kashmir valley in Saturday (May 30) after bodies of two young women were found under suspicious circumstances in Shopian town, 60 kilometres from summer capital, Srinagar.
The bodies of the 18-year old woman and her young aunt were recovered from a local brook on Saturday morning. The duo were reportedly missing after they failed to return home on Friday evening after visiting their orchard. The news of the the death of two women spread like wild fire in the town and brought thousands of protesters on the streets. Angry protesters pelted stones on security forces and ransacked government offices.
The crowd shouted slogans and asked the administration to produce the killers of the two women. They rejected government claims that the two duo appeared to have drowned in a local stream To bring the situation under control, local police was forced to fire tear gas shells and cane charge the protesters. At least 30 people were injured during the clashes, which abated later in the day but tension prevailed in Shopian. While the protesters have accused that the two women were molested by the security forces and later killed, authorities denied such allegations. A police official said that post-mortems and preliminary inquiry did not reveal any physical assault on the bodies.
