ALthough preventive measures such as calling off the AFSPA Act and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh requesting the security personnel not to use excessive artillery, the results have been devastating.
SITUATION IN Kashmir boiled up once again when 16 people were killed and about 60 more were left injured on Monday. The protests erupted when it was reported that an American pastor in Florida will be burning copies of the Quran on the eve of 9/11 attacks. The reports were first aired by an Iranian TV channel Press TV on Sunday.
The protests in Kashmir valley ended up showing alarming results that also included killing of innocent yet violent protesters. Although the protesters did not indulge in taking up arms as a means of protest, the only question that arises is, is it really necessary to use bullets and kill young boys for these protests? Preventive measures to mellow down the situation such as removal of AFSPA act have been suggested by concerned authorities from the state as well as the Centre albeit Manmohan Singh is asking the forces not to use excessive force, but so far it has not had any effect.
The Indian media and the government news are not believed by the Kashmiris as they think it is censored. It is important for the news media to present the truth in an unbiased manner and the government must allow free flow of information to make Indian media credible. Omar Abdullah has failed miserably on all fronts and has lost confidence of the people of Kashmir. There is no need for him to continue as chief minister. He will be better off as a minister in union cabinet.
