Constructing statues of political leaders can be undertaken to provide motivation to the people. However, spending money on these, superseding public interest, should not happen. In the end, its welfare of the people that should matter not statues.
IT SEEMS UP Chief minister Mayawati is going to have a tough time in the near future, if she keeps on constructing statues of herself and the Dalit icon - BR Ambedkar. The Supreme Court has warned her not to construct any memorials and they might ask the UP government to show the budget papers for the memorials.
It's a pity that the state's politicians have restricted themselves to spend most of the time and money in construction of memorials of dalit leaders. Thousands of crores collected by them in the form of tax from the public are going in vain. In the present scenario of recession, the people of UP are not going to get even 1 per cent benefit out of this. Instead of concentrating on major problems like unemployment, poverty, scarcity of electricity, child labour, corruption, murder, rape etc prevailing in the society, they are busy in publicising their own and their party image.
Before constructing any memorial or statue, they should ask these questions from themselves - is this statue going to fill the stomach (even once a day) of all those poor people who are living in poverty from years? Are the unemployed youth going to get any kind of employment opportunity out of this? Will this solve the problem of electricity in those areas where power is available for only two hours a day?
The answer yes stands nowhere nearby these kind of questions. This doesn't mean hat such statues and memorials are completely useless for the public. Generally, they are built to be a rich source of inspiration and motivation, making people remember the work, character and the sacrifice of various leaders for our nation. But there should always be a limit of everything and a democratic government should always prioritise their policies in the order in which the public money would get fruitfully utilised for the people in the current scenario.
In India, the public only selects a government based on trust and this should not be broken under any circumstances. The money spent on the welfare of the society by keeping their problems in mind is going to give a light of prosperity to the present as well as the coming generations and these kind of work done by any government would remain memorable in the heart of the people for thousands of years.
