Punjab celebrates martyrdom day of Guru Arjan Dev with devotion and gaiety
In Punjab, Various Gurudwaras as well as various other religious, social and educational organizations held congregations and functions to commemorate the Martyrdom Day of Guru Arjan Dev, the fifth Guru of the Sikhs, on May 22.
Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, paid tributes to Guru Arjan Dev and stated, "On his martyrdom day I bow to the venerable Guru Arjan Dev ji. His life is an inspiration, epitomizing great service, bravery and sacrifice."

Various Gurudwaras in Punjab were thronged by devotees to pay homage to Guru Arjan Dev who is regarded as epitome of brotherhood, kindness, equality, and tolerance. He was the first martyr of Sikh faith, who compiled writings for the first rendition of the Guru Granth Sahib.

He was asked to convert to Islam by the ruler of Delhi Jahangir and marry his daughter. On refusing to do so, he was made to sit over the hot furnace and tortured to death. He was the founder-builder of the Golden Temple at Amritsar.

Guru Arjan Dev had also founded the Masand system for spreading the teachings of the Gurus and formalized the system of voluntary offering to support the building of Gurdwara Sahib and Langar.

However, Sikhs of Punjab were dismayed when the Pakistan High Commission rejected the visa of 150 Sikh pilgrims visiting Pakistan to commemorate the martyrdom day of Guru Arjan Dev.
