Punjab farmer throws potatoes on national highway in protest
Farmers of Punjab state are worried about the non-availability of marketing and cold storage facilities from the state government. The potato crop stored on their own by the farmers stands ruined.

The bumper production of potatoes this year has further added to their woes, and on Saturday, one of the farmers threw bags full of potatoes on the roadside on the Ferozepur-Fazilka highway near Lakho Ke Behram village.

The problem is grave that the farmers don't have arrangements of their own for preservation of crops in the event of the prevailing market prices being too low.

Talking to media persons, Karnail Singh Bhawra, Punjab President, Jat Reservation Sangharsh Committee said that the previous governments had ruined the farmers' community because of their anti-farmer policies.

He alleged that although the government talks about crop diversification, there are no arrangements for marketing and storage.

Bhawra said, "The farmers are getting the price of their produce even below the actual cost and sometimes they become victims of natural calamities putting a great loss to them.  In such a situation, Punjab's farmer has become a victim of economic crisis and at one point; the debt-ridden farmers are compelled to commit suicide."

Stating the reasons, he said, "The government should formulate policies in favour of farmers and they must be paid the reasonable prices of their produce at least above the production cost to live a normal life."

"In the past also, lack of storage facilities has forced the farmers to sell their yield at low prices which has once again dashed their hopes of good returns," he added.

He appealed to the government to make arrangements for marketing and storage of farmers' produce to take out the farmers from the clutches of financial crisis.
