Punjab farmers demand release of normal flow of water in canals for timely paddy sowing
The Punjab Canal Department claimed to have release the water on June 10 in the canals throughout the State but well before its release, the canals were neither repaired nor the banks were filled. However, in certain canals, despite start of paddy season, the water has not been released in the canals for irrigation by the farmers.

Normally the silt clearance, herm cutting and repair to the canal structures are carried out well before the release of the water for irrigation purposes. The de-silting and repairing embankments of canals saved scare water resource for maintaining normal water flows in canals, branches and distributaries.

There are certain canals where the unwanted greenery is grown up which the authorities have not bothered to clear before release of water. The released water could pose a big problem of breaching, flood like situation, at certain places due to non-flowing of water.

Likewise, the canals on Ferozepur-Khai road have been released the water and there is no cleanliness in Lachmman canal since it was made pacca with the result, it is difficult to reach the water at the tail end minors.

Even the full water has not been released whereas the paddy sowing season has started officially and the farmers are compelled to use the diesel engines by purchasing the diesel at the higher rates disturbing the economic statistics of the farmers.

The farmers of the area - Amarjit Singh & others - have demanded from the State Government and Canal Department to release the normal flow of water in the canals so that the paddy sowing is completed well in time.
