TO COUNTER the terror threat, the government of Punjab is working on an action plan to create an elite security unit called Special Security Group (SSG) along the lines of Special Protection Group (SPG) to secure the state’s key politicians, top bureaucrats and other functionaries.
Following the increasing arrests of dreaded terrorists and uncovering of sleeper cells of Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence (ISI), the Punjab Police has since long been planning to put in place an elite unit to provide security to top government functionaries.
A senior official of the government opined that there is a need to have SSG to provide foolproof security cover to the state’s top functionaries. "At present, we depend upon the state police personnel, who are not exclusively trained for VIP protection in a state like Punjab, where terrorism is a major threat,” he added.
The recent arrests of terrorists shows that Punjab Police needs to have SSG to protect top functionaries. On July 15, Punjab Police had arrested BKI commander Harminder Singh with his three accomplices and recovered 3.1 kilogram of RDX, an AK 47 and a revolver from them.
Two months ago, the Punjab police arrested a terrorist identified as Sher Singh Shera and recovered an AK-47 rifle and ammunition from his possession. On June 22, the State Special Operation Cell of Intelligence Wing with the interrogation of the arrested BKI militant Nishan Singh recovered one AK 47 assault rifle, 110 cartridges, one revolver 32 bore and three automatic Chinese pistols.
The Punjab government is also planning to have a dedicated unit to deal with the problem of terrorism and other subversive forces in the State. At present, the Punjab Police’s Counter Intelligence (CI) wing deals with high profile cases including terror activities, and providing high level inputs about the security and safety important politicians and top bureaucrats.
Sources revealed that since there is no special department in Punjab Police, which can put a watch on these terrorists, the arrested ultras are only the tip of an iceberg.
Most of the terrorists and the associates of banned organisations such as Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) have been arrested on the information of Punjab intelligence wing. However, district police also plays a vital role in their arrest.
Last month, three Pakistani spies were arrested from Chandigarh, Ludhiana and Ferozepur. They were living in Punjab for past several years. After their arrest, police officials had claimed that some major terrorist actions could be possible in the State.
“If we go by the trend, there is no doubt that attempts are being made to revive the Sikh militancy in Punjab. In the last two months, eight terrorists were arrested by the police. Punjab is one of the favourite states for terrorists to spread their activities and they are getting adequate support from the ISI in this regard,” he said.
