Punjab intensify setting up of de-addiction and rehabilitation centers
A high level delegation of the Punjab Government yesterday visited Badal village to inspect arrangements and availability of proper infrastructure to start rehabilitation center for drug addicts. The delegation was led by Mrs. Vinne Mahajan, Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, who was accompanied by Special Principal Secretary to CM, Mr. KJS Cheema, Secretary Health Mr. Vikas Garg and Specialist from PGI Chandigarh Dr. Avasthi and Dr. Wasu.
Mrs. Mahajan said that they were visiting 6 districts of the state on the directions of Punjab Chief Minister to examine and explore the infrastructure available to start rehabilitation centers with immediate effect.  She said that the government had accelerated the work to establish rehabilitation centers, one in each district after providing free treatment of drug addicts to bring them in society's mainstream.

She said that the high level team is on visit to Patiala, Bathinda, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Amritsar, Ludhiana and SBS Nagar districts to access the available infrastructure to start rehabilitation centers as early as possible. Treatment facilities will also be made available in all district in drug de-addiction centers and OPD services as well in all the Community Health centers (CHC) across the state by specially trained doctors, she added. She further said that approximately 8000 drug addicts are visiting daily for their treatment.

Special Principal Secretary to CM, Mr. KJS Cheema said that 10 bedded de-addiction centers are already functional at Civil Hospital, Badal  and Malout in district except OPD facilities at 5 CHCs. He said that 50 bedded rehabilitation center will start functioning very soon at Civil Hospital Badal.  

He said that the government is fully committed to control the evils of drug addiction from the state and to bring drug addicts back into society's mainstream, and 22 rehabilitation centers will be established in the state. He said that proper counseling, sports, religious activities will be provided in these centers.

He said that short term skill development courses will also be provided in these rehabilitation centers to make them economically self independent. After the treatment in drug de-addiction centers patients will stay in these rehabilitation centers from 2 to 6 months as per their psychological condition, he added.

The team also visited the drug de-addiction center. There were a number of other prominent persons who were present during the occasion.
