Question mark over Punjab's education standard: 26% teaching and 36% non-teaching posts lying vacant
On the one hand eligibility test passed unemployed teachers are crying for jobs whereas on the other hand, 26 per cent posts of teaching staff are lying vacant in government primary, middle, high and senior secondary schools.
Similarly, 36 per cent seats of non-teaching staff are lying vacant of the category of class IV, clerk, assistants and senior clerks. The shortage of both the categories are badly affecting the education system in the state.

On the information given by Education Minister, Daljit Singh Cheema in the Assembly session about the vacant posts of teaching and non-teaching lying vacant in government schools of Punjab, Raj Kishore Kalra, Patron and Ashok Monga, Member, Punjab Education Reforms Committee said, in all the government schools in the state, 1, 09, 467 sanctioned posts of different categories, 28, 229 posts are lying vacant. They further informed that in middle, high and senior secondary schools, against 76, 833 posts, around 21, 217 posts, say about 28 per cent posts are lying vacant.

Giving a proposal to the Punjab Government, the Punjab Education Reforms Committee members said, in case the JBT qualified teachers in primary schools, master cadre in lecturer cadre or headmaster or lecturer and headmaster to principal cadre and class-2 to class-1 are promoted in all categories, the problem of filling up the vacant posts would be solved and the promoted teachers will have feeling of higher responsibility.

Further, the vacant posts in the primary cadre can be filled through recruitment.

The Committee also demanded from the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister that in case the government wants to upgrade the standard of education in Punjab in real sense, then the process of filling up the vacant posts of teaching and non-teaching staff should be started immediately.

While these arrangements will bring efficiency in the working of the education department, the unemployed qualified teachers would also get the opportunity to get the jobs.
