RACHEL CHRISTIE, the first black woman to be crowned as Miss England has given up her crown after being arrested on suspicion of a nightclub assault.
The 21 year old Rachel, wanted to concentrate on clearing her name. She allegedly had punched Miss Manchester, Sara Beverley Jones in the face at a dispute which took place at a nightclub in Manchester.
Rachel was arrested on suspicion of assault and has been bailed until January 2010. Rachel, who is the niece of former sprinter Linford Christie is also a heptathlete hoping to compete in the 2012 Olympics.
It is believed that Miss Manchester, Sara was allegedly punched in the face after a heated argument which took place about a TV personality Tornado, from Sky1’s Gladiator programme. Sara is believed to be the ex-girlfriend of Tornado, who’s real name is David McIntosh, where as Rachel is his current partner.
Miss England organisers said that due to the media attention following the allegations against her, Rachel Christie had decided to withdraw from the Miss World competition and relinquish her Miss England crown. She will concentrate on clearing her name and focus more on training for the 2012 Olympics until the pending case is resolved.
Great Manchester Police also confirmed that they were called to the Mansion nightclub off Deansgate around 0100 GMT on Monday. Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward and help them in getting a clear picture and a better idea about the incident that took place.
