Rahat Fateh Ali Khan detained at Delhi airport
The Indian Custom Act allows only an amount equivalent to 5,000 US dollars in cash to be carried while travelling and the same in the form of traveller's cheque after which any excess amount has to be declared with the immigration authorities.
WORLD RENOWNED Sufi singer from Pakistan Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, who also happens to be the nephew of late legendary singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, made headlines not for what he is best known for but for carrying undisclosed amount of foreign currency which amounts to around one lakh US dollars.

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, who came to Ajmer to perform at a function was returning to Pakistan when the Department of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) sleuths stopped him at the Indira Gandhi international airport Delhi when he was about to board his plane to Dubai from where he was supposed to take another flight to Karachi in Pakistan on Sunday night.

The Indian Custom Act allows only an amount equivalent to 5,000 US dollars in cash to be carried while travelling and the same in the form of traveller’s cheque after which any excess amount has to be declared with the immigration authorities present at the airport.

The surveillance to check ‘hawala’ money flow with the rise in acts of terrorism, has also been stepped up, and perhaps it was due to this vigil that singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan got trapped in the net. He was arrested by the authorities at the airport after the singer failed to reveal the authentic details of the sources from where he got this amount.

This lead to the raids in Mumbai by the department on Monday morning when the DRI authorities conducted city wide raids on the offices of event management companies which were in touch with the singer and were organising music concerts for the singer. The authorities are looking into the accounts and all details to verify whether the singer had any relations with the hawala operators of the city or not.

The singer will be produced in the court today.
