AICC GENERAL secretary Rahul Gandhi will address a public rally for the first time ever in Kolkata today. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Pradesh Congress president Manas Bhunia will also attend the rally, which will take place at the Shahid Minar grounds in the heart of the city.
Rahul Gandhi will meet senior state Congress leaders, MPs and MLAs, Youth Congress and Chhatra Parishad leaders at party headquarter Bidhan Bhavan. Congress General Secretary will also launch a membership drive for the Youth Congress, ahead of state assembly election, which is due next year.
The West Bengal Congress workers have put up over 10,000 flags and 500 hoardings across the city to welcome AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi. West Bengal Congress leaders are hopeful that Rahul's tour will give the momentum to the party and motivate workers.
In the state, Congress is in alliance with Mamata Banerjee led Trinamool Congress to take on the ruling Left government. However, Congress leaders and workers desperately hope to give the party an independent identity and come out of Trinamool Congress’s shadow. Later this month on September 25, Congress president Sonia Gandhi is scheduled to visit Kolkata to attend the Congress’ eastern zonal conference.
