Rahul likely to play role of kingmaker
Praising Rahul Gandhi?s role in bringing victory to the party, Dr Manmohan Singh said it is time for him to join his cabinet. He made this offer to Rahul while talking with the media and in the presence of Sonia Gandhi.

IN THE face of decisive victory of the Congress and its allies in the Lok Sabha elections, the power structure in the ruling party is likely to take a new dimension. Party general secretary Rahul Gandhi is likely to emerge as the real power centre in the party and also in the government.

So far, Rahul Gandhi has kept a low-profile. Now he is likely to play the role of kingmaker. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has openly invited Rahul Gandhi to join his cabinet. But he refused the offer politely, stating that he would concentrate on strengthening the party.

Ironically, Rahul has not proved to be a very good campaigner for his party. In the states where he had actively canvassed for the party candidates, the Congress witnessed a severe setback. On the other hand, strategically, in this election, Rahul addressed a large number of election public meetings in the country, even more than his mother Sonia Gandhi. He had extensively toured many states, which led to good dividends in the form of votes.

Rahul Gandhi’s future role in the party and government was demonstrated in the Prime Minister’s open invitation once again following results, at the residence of Sonia Gandhi. He made this invitation while talking with the media and in the presence of Sonia Gandhi. Praising Rahul Gandhi’s role in bringing victory to the party, he said it is time for him to join his cabinet.

Sonia Gandhi has responded positively this time by saying it will be the Prime Minister’s privilege to choose his cabinet. However, she ruled out immediate chances of Rahul Gandhi becoming Prime Minister, saying that the Congress Party and Rahul Gandhi have many times clearly stated that Manmohan Singh was their Prime Ministerial candidate.

However, Rahul Gandhi’s presence in the cabinet is likely to clear all odds for succession politics and may pave the way for him to become Prime Minister after a year or two.
