Rail Budget 2014-15: More than 50 new trains announced; private sector to play role in rail
Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA govt presented its first rail budget today in the Parliament. The railways minister Sadanand Gowda unveiled the strategy of his govt regarding bringing the derailed Indian railways back on track.

The rail minister announce more than 50 new trains in his budget. He announced bullet train to run between Mumbai and Ahmedabad soon. Railways minister also signalled entry of private players in the railways system in different areas. Here's the summary of the rail budget.


  • New trains: 5 Jansadharan, 5 Premium, 27 express trains, 8 passengers trains to be started.

  • Facility of online booking of retiring rooms at the stations to be introduced.
  • To provide clean drinking water RO system will be set up in trains and on platforms.
  • On the roof tops of platforms solar panels to be set up to generate electricity.
  • Railways to introduce special milk transportation wagons.
  • Introduction of wake-up calls, updates, wi-fi at select stations and trains for the passengers.
  • There will be railways university.

  • 4000 new RPF women constables to be recruited
  • Ready to eat food of known brands to be provided to the passengers. Passenger can order for their food through SMS
  • Battery operated vehicles, in partnership with private sector, for disabled, senior citizens to take them from one to another platform.
  • There is an estimate of 2% increase in passenger traffic in 2014-15 and and a revenue of Rs 44, 645 cr is expected from this.
  • Railways needs to arrange more resources through PPP.

  • Says, due to non-hike in passenger fares the railways development has suffered badly. thus, hints toward regular hike in fare in coming days.
