Presenting the Railway Budget for 2010-11 in Parliament, the Minister put great emphasis on safety and security and reiterated that there would be zero tolerance for the accidents.
PRESENTING THE Raiway Budget 2010 on February 24 in the Lok Sabha, Railways Minister, Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said that her ministry will follow the twin strategy of adopting high technology and use well well trained manpower, as emphasized in Vision 2020 for safety and security.
Presenting the Railway Budget for 2010 in Parliament, the Minister also put great emphasis on safety and security and reiterated that there would be zero tolerance for the accidents. She informed that 17,000 trains carry 18 million passengers over 64,015 route- kms every days and such in huge operations, there was possibility of accidents. Railways will adopt Anti-collision device (ACD) and Train Protection Warning System (TPWS) to prevent accidents.Railway Minister Banerjee as part of the budget speech also said that all 170000 unammned railway crossings will be manned in next five years as part of a special drive. The Railway minister also said that her ministry will construct more more under-passes, limited height sub-ways besides Rail Over Bridges (ROBs) and Rail Under Bridges (RUBs). Banerjee also sought the support of state governments in ensuring better security on the Indian railway network. She appealed to the people not to target the Railways during any local issue and frequent rail rooks agitation. Referring to security of women passengers, she said it will be improved by raising 12 companies of women RPF personnel to be named ‘Mahila Vahini’. Railway Protection Special Force(RPSF) will also be strengthened and priority will be given to women especially those belonging to minorities, SC/ST, OBC and economically backward classes. She also proposed a new scheme of “House for All” that will provide residences to all railway employees in the next ten years with the help of Ministry of Urban Development. Banerjee also announced setting up of a Railway Cultural and Heritage Promotion Board which will be responsible for coordinating and supervising all culture and heritage related activities on the railways.
