The Indian railways have reduced the age limit for female senior citizens from 60 to 58 and increased fare concession to male senior citizens from existing 30 per cent to 40 per cent.
THE INDIAN railways have issued a notification to increase fare concession to male senior citizens and to reduce age limit for female senior citizens while traveling in the Mail or Express trains and all inclusive fares of Rajdhani, Shatabdi or Jan Shatabdi trains. The concession will be applicable on and after June 1.
Earlier, the then railway minister Mamata Banerjee had announced on her railway budget speech in the parliament on February 25 this year to reduce the minimum age for availing concession from 60 years to 58 years in case of female senior citizens.
In Indian railways, existing fare concession for senior male citizens is 30 per cent and for female senior citizens is 50 per cent. According to the latest decision by the railways, male senior citizens now can avail concession between 30 and 40 per cent. However, the minimum age will remain continue to be 60 years.
Railways concession for female senior citizens will remain the same - the existing 50 per cent. Other terms and conditions of the railways will be remained same.
New Railways changes will be applicable on the tickets that will be purchased on and after June 1. Meanwhile, railways will not refund the difference in fare that have been already issued for travel on and after June 1.
Presently when a husband and wife senior cityzen seek ticket, the railway counter clerk spent more time in calculating 30% & 5-% separately. If it is made uniform 50% for both male and female the savings in man-hou will nullfy the loss of revenue and benefit senior cityzen
