September and October 2 in Andhra Pradesh will be remembered as black days. On 2 September 2009 the Chief Minister died in a helicopter crash in Kurnool district and exactly after a month another disaster occurred in the same district
It is sheer coincidence that a disaster occurred in Andhra Pradesh on 2 September 2009 in which the Chief Minister died in a helicopter crash in Kurnool district and exactly after a month another disaster occurred in the same district. Kurnool city was almost submerged because of unprecedented floods in the Krishna River. Besides the important pilgrim town of Mantralayam in the same district was inundated. The Swamiji of the Mutt had to be airlifted to Hospet town.
Both incidents occurred due to bad weather. In the first incident a popular leader died and in the second over 50 people died and lakhs were rendered homeless.
Both incidents caused untold damage because the administration did not follow the weather reports. This year, people in AP prayed to God Varuna for rains for relief from drought. There were incessant rains. The fury of the Krishna River resulted in the worst ever floods. Thanks to the civil engineers that even after the reserves were 10 feet in excess the Srisailam Dam was intact. Or else entire Kurnool and Mahaboobnagar districts would have disappeared. Now the entire focus is on Vijayawada, where the Prakasam Barrage is receiving high inflows. If the discharge of the barrage crosses 11 lakhs cusecs a disaster may unfold for 15 lakh people of Vijayawada city and its surrounding villages.
