Raina rains runs in Asia Cup 2008
The consistency that is being revealed by team India while chasing large scores is a sign that the present team is not worried about the lack of seniors. If the trend continues, we would see a beaming team holding the Asia Cup 2008 up in the air.

SURESH RAINA is turning out to be an exciting find for the Indian cricket team. In the Asia cup 2008 match against Bangladesh, he scored another century – and bagged the man-of-the-match award. He has achieved this distinction three times in a row in this series. He got a life when he was on 16 and capitalised on this by remaining 119 not out – it included three sixes. Raina hails from Uttar Pradesh and has been in the One Day International (ODI) squad since July 2005, but has not been capped for the test team so far. He is a left handed batsman and a useful off spin bowler. His ability to hit the stumps from infield has been a great asset for him. It was mainly due to his partnership with Gautam Gambhir that added 139 runs for the second wicket and provided the impetus that propelled the Indian team to their victory. Gambhir contributed 90 runs and missed out on his century by a whisker. Robin Uthappa (two) and Rohit Sharman (22) went cheaply and if the Bangladeshis had held on to three vital catches, it would have been a different story.

The Bangladesh team showed the improvement that they have made over the past years. They won the toss and elected to bat. Alok Kapali scored 115 runs with five sixes – it was his maiden century in just 86 balls. Opener Tanim Iqbal scored 55 runs. The other players chipped in with useful contributions and the final target set for the Indians was 283. This was Bangladesh’s highest score against India in all ODIs, beating the previous best of 257-nine at Dhaka in 2004. India won by seven wickets with more than six overs left – Abdur Razak captured three scalps.

This win would do a world off good to the Indians. The consistency that is being revealed by team India while chasing large scores is a sign that the present team is not unduly worried about the lack of the seniors. It happens - Nature abhors vacuum. A time comes when the absence of persons does not make much impression on those who remain. It is all about the determination to survive and prove to the world that others can step into the shoes left vacant by the seniors. If the present trend continues, we should be seeing a beaming team returning to base holding the Asia Cup 2008 high up in the air. It would be a fitting reply to critics who are unable to accept the fact that senior players in a team of bubbling young ones do more harm than good.
