Raingods lash, Delhi witnesses Capital nightmare
Heavy showers brought life to a standstill and normal life was completely thrown out of gear in Delhi and NCR as roads stood waterlogged and low-lying areas were flooded, speaking volumes about the poor affair of the infrastructure planning.
JUST A single night's rain in Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR) reminds of  Harappa and Mohenjodaro, the ancient civilisation, which had devised a top class drainage and flood management system in ancient times, without today's advanced technology or rocket science.  The manner in which Delhi gets flooded despite the Yamuna playing no role in it, forces one to think that it's time we should take inspiration from the Indus valley cities and perhaps plan, design and execute the infrastructure on their lines.

History is witness that despite incessant flooding, the cities in Indus Valley Civilisation (IVC) had an immaculate municipal system that ensured life went on smoothly, unlike the present. A mere mention of rains brings bad memories of traffic jams, roadblocks, uprooted trees and waterlogged roads, as can be witnessed.

On Thursday, heavy showers brought life to a standstill in Delhi and NCR as roads stood waterlogged and low-lying areas were flooded, speaking volumes about the poor affair of the infrastructure planning in the country. The question is that if Indus Valley people were able to develop efficient drainage system there is no reason, why Delhi and NCR, one of the fastest growing areas in the country can not have better infrastructure to escape the wrath of the elements.

Normal life was completely thrown out of gear as most of the roads were inundated with water and failure of traffic signals added to the woes of the commuters. Huge traffic jams were witnessed at Delhi-Noida Expressway, Delhi-Jaipur National highway near Gurgaon, Ring Road, while Dhaula Kuan, one of the key intersections of Delhi was flooded with water.
Traffic virtually crawled on most of the roads as people tried to negotiate traffic on roads, few traffic policemen and traffic signals were conspicuous by their failure. Bumper to bumper traffic was visible on roads with car drivers trying to maintain their cool in the heat of Delhi rains.

People commuting on motorbikes were worst affected as they were drenched by the rains as well as water, which flooded the roads. The waterlogging and flooding in many areas also exposed the chinks in claims of authorities, who promise an end to these problems after every such downpour.

Many schools witnessed low turnout with parents deciding not to send their children to school in view of the adverse conditions, both on the road as well as overcast skies. A number of offices witnessed poor attendance as cabs were stuck in traffic jams and many of them broke down forcing the occupants to push them physically.

Millennium city Gurgaon was the worst affected with heavy waterlogging reported in Bus Stand area, Sector 14, posh Palam Vihar, Railway road and posh residential colonies built in the HUDA sectors. At Gurgaon Bus Stand, there was complete chaos as roads were flooded with waist high water.

Pankaj, who reached the bus stand at 8 am, said that movement of vehicles was almost impossible due to water on the roads. The local auto-rickshaws have stopped service and people are now waiting for water to subside, he rued.

Most of the roads in Gurgaon were converted into drains, making life much more difficult as potholes turned invisible. Cycle rickshaws became the preferred mode of transport as these contraptions easily managed to cover short distances as wily drivers know the roads they frequent at the back of their hands.

Waterlogging was witnessed in front of posh addresses, with many nattily dressed staffers were seen jumping the walls and walking on road dividers to reach to negotiate the watery roads and streets. Parking areas were the worst affected as water got collected due to overnight rains making it almost impossible to be used.

The problems on the roads and our lives are unlikely to end as Met has predicted more rainfall in the next twenty hours. It appears that raingods are trying to make up for the deficiency of the past few months but if they continue for few more days, it is quite possible that Delhi and National Capital Region will resemble like ancient Mohenjodaro and Harappa.

people should understand the Surpream Power is God . why u Affraid think what is happening in flooded area in bihar . your problem in one or two days . Delhi rain is nothing . in Madhubani bihar continues raining for 2 Days
Dwarka is the worst affected since the underpass gets flooded, the PALAM flyover gets jammed by traffic and people living in this Subcity gets cut off. More so for people who travel to Gurgaon from here. But for the administration it is just another rain and another oppurtunity to play the blame game and do nothing to resolve the problems. Apart from the ill-designed flyovers, what has the government given us? The so called development for meeting the CommonWealth games deadline is all hogwash. They have got a huge cash cow and are milking it to death!
Every time it rains we have virtual flash floods in Gurgaon and especially the Dwarka underpass. Our politicians have gone deaf and blind. Are we waiting for a disaster for them to start acting AND STOP talking on the Television interviews. Babus too either dont care or are helpless. Let Manmohan singh, sonia gandhi and sheila Dixit drive on the streets of Gurgaon and Delhi without police escort and without VVIP routing arrangements on a day it rains. What are we talking about a double digit growth etc etc . we are up for a biggest every embarrassment for our country next year in september 2010 when we will have the whole world present in delhi for the commonwealth games. High time we gotta do something. we cannot be sitting and waiting for miracle to happen.
