THE MAN who used to love taking risks and would always give breaks to young actors in the industry, Raj Kanwar, died at the age of 50. Known to have given young actors such as Shahrukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra and Lara Dutta their much needed screen presence, he died in Singapore on Friday afternoon due to post-kidney transplant complications. He had been suffering from kidney problems due to severe diabetes.


He had kidney transplant three days before and was under observation after some complications. Starting his career with Shekhar Kapur and Raj Kumar Santoshi, his last film was launching Shatrughan Sinha’s son Luv Sinha in Sadiyaan. As reported by indianexpress.com, he was unwell for many months and after the kidney transplant, breathed his last in front of his wife.

Known for his films such as Deewana, (1992), Laadla (1994), Jaan (1996) and Judaai (1997), as soon news of his untimely demise reached the industry, everyone took to the microblogging site Twitter, to express their sorrow. SRK tweeted, “My friend Raj Kanwarji passed away. The impermanence of life, makes one feel so helpless. May his soul rest in peace. Aisi Deewangi..miss u sir.” Abhishek Bachchan also took to Twitter to say that how grateful he was to the director, who was the only one to sign him after his debut flop Refugee and was also the first director to sign him and Aishwarya Rai in ‘Dhai Akshar Prem Ke.’

His last rites will be performed on Sunday for which he will be flown to Mumbai. The cremation will be carried out at Oshiwara cremation centre on Sunday, soon to be followed by bhog. Kanwar is among those people who in a short span of time managed to touch many people’s life and make a mark. In his 20 years of career he made 16 films and but was still one of the respected film makers of the industry.
