Raj Thackeray fixation robbing nationalists of empathy
MNS pressed ambulances and organised blood donation camps during the siege by terrorists. Its leaders refrained from 'disaster tourism', unlike ‘nationalistic’ heroes. Also, MNS faces harassment in courts of remote small towns in the Hindi belt.
THERE WAS a bonanza for couch potatoes sitting in front of TV screens or office computers last month. It was not some day-night cricket stuff to shout and express their ’loyalty to the motherland’. They had 24x7 adventure fare as Mumbai reeled under a deadly assault. Rather than 11+11 heroes, they ‘enjoyed’ 10 gun-wielding, decently dressed ’angry young men’ – the type idolized in Bollywood blockbusters. The guys managed to achieve what they had come for. The byproduct of the carnage was hundreds of deaths and injuries and material damage worth Rs 50,000 crore.

Maybe the ’dirty ten’ landed from Karachi as Indian officials always claim after every one of the terror crimes (never cracked credibly). But, it was obvious that they had local ’accomplices’, who may not have had to ’come’ for the job from elsewhere. Perhaps, Gujarati fishermen who routinely stray into ’enemy waters’; maybe residents of coastal Maharashtra; or, even more likely, they may have arrived from the Hindi heartland. In fact, it was reported that some of them spoke fluent Hindi.

The way the suicide squads hijacked vehicles, including a police jeep, in their mission was a chilling replay of a handsome brat from Patna pointing his gun at passersby from a BEST bus a month ago. It turned out that he was a freshly passed X-ray technician, forced to become a sort of refugee due to lack of openings near home. But, there was no reason to take for granted that he was a typical ‘harmless’ North Indian youth with a ‘patriotic’ mindset. Only after shooting him down, did it become known that like many of his ilk, he was mad at perceived enemies in well-off states. The political masters of the Hindi belt, who are responsible for such youth turning into mindless thugs by bleeding people white, slammed the Maharashtra police. The cops were accused of abetting Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and its chief Raj Thackeray and ‘murdering the Patna youth’.

The terrorist attack left most NDA and UPA heavyweights from the Hindi belt speechless on the issue of what is termed as “anti-North Indian stir in Maharashtra”. Rajiv Ranjan Singh – state JD(U) president and one of the five MPs ’felicitated’ for quitting the Lok Sabha ‘for the sake of Bihar and Biharis’ – called a truce. The ’national’ spokesperson Shyam Raja of RJD concurred, "The Mumbai terror attacks are a national issue. All other issues are secondary. We can fight on other issues another day."

However, just as Mumbai was burning, lesser worthies from the belt, peddling their own brands of ’nationalism’, joined in with their own assault. Demanding protection to locals from unrestrained influx of white-collar labourers, jeopardising their opportunities is dubbed as parochialism by these rabid ’Rashtriyawadis’ (nationalists). Centuries-old linguistic and social ’asmita’ (pride and belonging) by various ethnic identities is trashed. Hostile political activities by these leaders descending frequently on Mumbai, alienates settlers to locals instead of ironing out conflicts. It is because they perpetuate a distinct identity for the settlers, with a view to create vote banks.

Also, there are vested interests in various regions, which stand to benefit by unfair imposition of values and language of one section over others. The apologists of the ’national’ establishment stoke the fire by instigating settlers to fight against preference to locals, what MNS fights for.

According to the ‘intellectual’ instigators, Maharashtra has a very long coastline vulnerable hostile sea based penetration and assaults. But, the military of India is largely composed of "men of original Hindi states such as UP and Bihar and Rajasthan, followed by the likes of Punjab and Haryana!" Even if the relevance of the point is not questioned, Maharashtrians do constitute seven per cent of the Indian armed forces.

The vitriol went on: "The Hindustan military with IAF and NSG commandos" had to be called in to save Mumbai and Wing Commander Sharma had to rescue the hostages. But, "Thackeray and the Marathi Manoos" went missing; Maharashtrians would be "singing the national anthem of Waziristan or Pakistan" had if it was not flying "Maurya Chakra and Hindustan flag as part of Bharat!." The inference was that the ‘Mauryans’ (led by Lalu Prasad and Rabri?) must be allowed to flood the state without any regulation! The ferocity of venom spit on Raj Thackeray was so strong that one would even have thought that these firebrands were behind the Mumbai outrage, to take revenge for the ‘martyrdom’ of Rahul Raj!

Bhojpuri actors Bipin Bihari and Manoj Mishra Mihir, meantime, mounted a campaign titled "Raj Thackeray Ka Ilaaj: Let’s Fight Back". Supporters of the jokers were urged to lodge an FIR against Raj Thackeray in different courts. The second-named ’leader’ filed one at Gorakhpur to ‘lead’ them!

Actually, MNS was bogged down with umpteen such silly court cases. Only on Nov 28, the Jharkhand High Court heard its petition to excuse physical appearance of its chief in various Jharkhand courts and transfer of all the cases to the home state. The pleas of Raj Thackeray’s counsel that he cannot be tried in every district of the country for the same offence was strongly contested by advocate general PK Prasad. Fatly paid from Jharkhand people’s tax money, he said that though the purported offence was same, the details were not exactly the same! And the HC Bench further stretched out the harassment, by reserving order. Meantime, a Jamshedpur judge was ‘kind enough’ to admit deferment of hearing in a case till Dec 6. In the funny scheme of things of India, any small time magistrate, yearning for cheap publicity, can harass anyone – be it the world renowned artist MF Hussein, or Shilpa Shetty or Rakhi Sawant.

Despite such ’nationalistic’ harassment, MNS had organised blood donation camps in Mumbai. It had pressed ambulances running around city and more than 500 of its members donated blood for injured victims. Of course, they refrained from ’disaster tourism’ undertaken by the likes of Manmohan Singh, Advani or Ram Gopal Verma! But, it was ’disconcerting’ for some patriots to observe that Raj Thackeray ‘had gone missing’. Others were shouting “Where is Marathi Manoos, Raj Thackeray and his bunch of goons?” Yet others started advising Mumbaikars to reassess him as “a leader who would desert you in the time of need; who cannot soothe the people and incapable of encouraging his people”.

Ill-informed hotheads opposing MNS had earlier included Kishore Samrite, a Hindi land ‘lawmaker’, who announced a price of Rs 1 crore for the head of the ‘enemy of Hindi’, falsely accusing him of insulting Hindi-speaking people by knifing a caption ‘Bhaiya’. It must be admitted that while Raj Thackeray may be just another Indian politician – known more for amassing wealth than serving the community – MNS does appear to be the least harmful outfit for the constituency it serves. Raj Thackeray is far better than the estranged loyalist of the Nehru dynasty, Amitabh Bachchan, who exposed himself as another one of the questionable petty politicians of India, ready to stoop to any low. The crorepati actor had fraudulently become a ‘farmer’ to grab land. And, he now has for his buddy the worst wheeler dealer of India.

The superstar, who supposedly got so courageous at the outrage that he took out his gun and put it under his pillow, revealed his Raj Thackeray fixation. He accused Thackeray of "cowering underground while citizens of all nationalities were dying and the others were being rescued by the NSG, the navy and the army..." He went overboard after seeing an SMS, attributing itself to Raj’s wife Sharmila. It explained that all those who had lost their lives, while saving Mumbai are considered Marathis.

Preference to locals in opportunities is a legitimate concept, recognised all over the world. Every state of India, from Orissa to Tamil Nadu, implements it because it makes sense economically and sociologically. MNS is only demanding effective implementation, so that only the categories of migrants to mutually benefit are encouraged to come in. Even though it may irk white collar clerical labour, regulation will be good even for productive skilled labour. Migrants needed by the community and those already resident legitimately would welcome regulation in their own interest. The ’Rashtriyawadis’ are only robbing all empathy that such migrants enjoy in local communities. Fanatical advocacy of a free-for-all in migration in the name of ‘unity of the country’ will not have takers in any state.

hi
Rajesh
You dont know what Raj Thackeray was doing coz our Hindi Channels are suppressing those news & Raj is also not speaking to Hindi/English Channels due to their systematic vilification) This is what Raj Thackeray & his party MNS was doing during attacks: 1. When Congress was putting up banners for martys with more space for their office bearers on the banner, Raj Thackeray personally visited Karkare & Salaskar families WITHOUT any show-off 2. Got MNS to donate blood at JJ & GT hospitals (First ones to donate blood while others played political blame game) 3. Provided snacks to police & bystanders at Nariman house during action. 4. Maintained up-to-date list of dead people in CST & other rail stations. This was an important source for relatives (though written in just chalk) Finally Raj Thackeray is not an army commando, he is a political leader. He is already fighting Laloo & Mulayam who are pumping migrants in immense nos. into Mumbai & Maharashtra, then getting them registered as voters & thereby bringing their UP-Bihar brand of politics into Maharashtra. Only 3 political leaders were on the street during attacks: 1. Narendra Modi: Criticized as cheap for visiting Mumbai 2. Raj: Media lied he was hiding then criticized for not visiting .. heh 3 R R Patil: Criticized for saying I kept a Ganesh idol with me during outdoor visits. ITS REALLY IDIOTIC TO USE RAJ THAKERAY'S NAME IN THE LIST OF MINISTERS AS HE IS NOT A MINISTER. HE IS A LOCAL LEADER FIGHTING FOR HIS PEOPLE'S RIGHT IN THEIR OWN STATE.
