Rajasthan Municipal polls: Candidates should have toilet facility in their homes and should be class 10 pass
Ensuring a toilet at home has been made a mandatory criteria for contenders who wish to contest in next month's Rajasthan Municipal elections. Earlier in a order introduced during the Panchayati Raj polls the state government had said that to contest the elections candidates should be high school pass. This order is now going to be implemented in the Municipal polls.
While the latter was declared months ago, the new toilet law was imposed by an ordinance or executive order, at a time when just a month is left for the local elections in the state.

However, the opposition parties in the state are not pleased with the government's new decision. "Why was this criteria not announced when they made educational qualifications compulsory for panchayat members and why don't they implement this for MPs and MLAs first?" asked the State Congress chief Sachin Pilot in an interview to NDTV.

But, the state government called its latest order a commitment towards 'Clean India' and 'Clean Rajasthan' initiative.

"This is a progressive decision by the state government," said the government spokesperson Rajendra Rathore.

The ordinance has been challenged in court by the Congress and the civil society, claiming that the law will sideline half of the possible candidates from contesting the elections.
