Rajasthan's coaching city Kota turning into hub of suicide by students
Yet another teenager coaching student committed suicide by hanging himself in Kota, famous for its coaching institutes. According to the media reports, this year, 26 coaching students have committed suicide so far in the prime of their lives. Most of them could not bear the pressure of cut-throat competition and mechanical rigour of coaching.
The student who committed suicide was only 19 years old and was preparing for medical entrance examination by living as a paying guest in the city. Only, a few weeks ago, when another student had committed suicide, the state government had promised to tighten the noose on coaching centres whose teaching methods were psychologically unsound.

According to Jaipur-based counsellor, Dr. Anita Srivastava, not only Kota, even in most towns, the coaching centres have mushroomed due to low quality of main stream education and the extreme stress of studies at the coaching centres leading to enhanced suicidal tendencies among teenagers.

She narrated a case of a labour from a small town who got his son admitted to a private college in Jaipur, who rightfully, withdrew him (the son) mid-session on finding bad quality of education and insistent and coaxing of teachers for coaching because of which his son was feeling low and dejected. The family, along with son admitted to local college, are happy due less pressure of studies and psycho-social support of the parents.

"There is a dire need to improve the quality of education in regular schools and colleges along with improving the psycho-social environment of coaching centres, which produces stressful rivalry among the umpteen students competing for a few a seats sitting next to each other. When there is a crowd of rivals at one place, the academic environment becomes stressful," she added.
