TRIALS WERE carried out by the Research Design and Standard Organisation (RDSO), research arm of Indian Railways and the authorities appear to have been satisfied with the results. Speed in trains certainly helps and is always welcome but such attention needs to be paid on many other areas by the Indian Railways.
Speed and punctuality are important parameter to judge the efficiency of a railway network and the ground realities as far as the Indian Railways is concerned leaves a lot to be desired. Trains running late in inclement weather conditions like Monsoons when tracks get flooded or in winter when visibility is low due to fog, is understandable. But – when running late becomes a regular occurrence, it must be rectified. We must take a lesson from Japan where tickets are refunded in case the trains run late.
The reason is simple - the train brings the employees to work and delays have a cascading effect on the efficiency and productivity.
Apart from speed of trains, other areas that need to be taken care of include general cleanliness of not just the interior of compartments but also the toilets, the lights and fans should be in working conditions. There should be enough water supplies for a single journey.
And – of course, the TTEs should be visible and the travelling Railway police force should be at hand to ensure the safety of the passengers.
