IN FIVE states, the polling for 18 seats of Rajya Sabha began on Thursday (June 17). A close contest is expected during the voting for Rajya Sabha to decide the fate of Union minister Anand Sharma, LJP supremo Ram Vilas Paswan, legal luminary Ram Jethmalani, former Bharatiya Janata Party chief M Venkaiah Naidu and liquor baron Vijay Mallya among others.
In Rajasthan and Karnataka the contest is expected to be very tight amid reports of differences within the BJP over the candidatures of senior criminal lawyer Ram Jethmalani and liquor baron Vijay Mallya.
The BJP is divided on whether to support Mallya, who is contesting as an independent candidate from Karnataka or Jethmalani in Rajasthan. Vijay Mallya is bidding for a second term as an independent supported by 27-member JD-S legislature group.
The victory of Anand Sharma, Commerce and Industry Minister, and Ashq Ali Tak, has been already ensured by the ruling Congress Party with its strength of 102 MLAs in the Rajasthan Assembly. Congress Party is also keen to see industrialist-cum-politician Santosh Bagrodia entering the Upper House.
Among the four seats in Karnataka, liquor baron Vijay Mallya is all set to win one of them with the support of ruling BJP
"BJP has taken a decision to defeat the Congress candidate in the Rajya Sabha election as per the directive by the national leadership," state unit BJP chief K S Eswarappa said in Bangalore, indicating his party would help Mallya, the JD-S backed independent, to ensure his second term.
In Bihar there are five Rajya Sabha seats, four in Karnataka, three in Orissa and two in Jharkhand to which elections are being held.
