Ram Nath Kovind almost certain to become the next Indian President
In a surprise turn of events, BJP party chief Amit Shah today announced the name of Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind as NDA's presidential candidate. 70-year -old Kovind is a Dalit leader from Kanpur.

Kovind's name was decided during a meeting of BJP's parliamentary board chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Among those in attendance in the meeting were BJP national president Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley and Venkaiah Naidu.

The BJP had earlier constituted a three-member committee to pick a candidate for the upcoming election with Venkaiah Naidu and Rajnath Singh meeting opposition leaders for arriving at a consensus.

For a candidate to become eligible to stand in the presidential election, he or she requires 50 nominators and 50 seconders. All now rests on the opposition on whether they decided to field their own candidate or chose to support Kovind. However, it seems that the BJP has the necessary numbers to win the election.
