Ram Singh's 'suicide' a matter of serious security lapse: Mamta Sharma
Ram Singh, the main accused of the gang rape of the Delhi Braveheart 'Nirbhaya', committed suicide by hanging himself in Delhi's high-security Tihar Jail on Monday morning. According to news reports, Ram Singh was found hanging inside jail number 3 at around 5am with his own clothes. Reportedly, he was rushed to a jail hospital and declared brought dead. Singh's body was sent to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital for a post-mortem examination by a three-member team of doctors.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Mamta Sharma has demanded a thorough probe by competent authorities into the 'shocking' incident. She has also raised questions about the functioning of Tihar Jail that could not protect the under-trial who was under a suicide-watch.
“Suicide in a high security jail like Tihar is a matter of serious security lapse. The authorities must conduct a thorough probe to ascertain what led Ram Singh to take such an extreme step,” she stated.
Last month, Sharma had said that the NCW, mandated to improve the lot of women and empower them, was a “toothless and cash-starved” organisation.
Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Barkha Shukla Singh was also shocked and surprised that the accused hanged himself inside the high-security jail. “As far as I know, he was being kept in a separate barrack. So, I feel that it is a very surprising and raises questions on the police authorities,” she said.
The lawyers of the accused and his kin are suspecting a foul play and have alleged that Ram Singh was murdered and have demanded a CBI probe into the incident.
It may be recalled that Ram Singh was the driver of the bus in which the girl was raped. Singh’s brother Mukesh was driving the bus when Nirbhaya was sexually assaulted by the accused and his five other associates.
