Ramblings of my Sunday self - Part III
Life is a swinging between marriage and divorce. All marriage news double my joy and all divorces halve it. This Sunday I will muse on marriage and divorce.

THIS SUNDAY was great because it brought wedding news for me. Esha is now Ms. Takhtani. Veteran actors Dharmendra and Hema Malini, the ecstatic parents of the just married Esha Deol hosted a grand reception for their daughter and new son-in-law at a five-star hotel in Mumbai. She got married to Bharat Takthani on June 29 in a traditional South Indian style wedding.

The bride was glowing in a pink lehenga while husband Bharat Takhtani was dapper in a black suit. Earlier in February she was engaged to this Bandra businessman Bharat Takhtani. Groucho Marx said: Marriage is the chief cause of divorce.?Probably that is the only reason behind the desire for divorce between Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. After five years of marriage and amid rumours of a shaky relationship, Katie Holmes finally filed for divorce from Tom Cruise on June 29.

The duo is now in for one of the nastiest Hollywood custody battles over their six-year-old daughter. However, their divorce will not be recognized by their religion Scientology, according to the church's doctrines. There is a belief in the church of Scientology that marital problems come from 'withholds' or 'overts' - undiscussed issues or problems. Marriage is considered essential to family life along with the belief that the religion will strengthen bonds between partners. Scientologists also claim that people who follow the religion are more likely to stay married. There are many grounds given for demanding divorce for Hindu couples. Cruel treatment of the partner, mental disorder, either one suffering from a virulent and incurable form of leprosy, renouncing the world by entering any religious order or not being heard of for seven years or more as alive make divorce possible in India. But the main reason of divorce is still missing, because neither of this applies to the souring of Tom-Kat relationship.

The tragedy of marriage is that while all women marry thinking that their man will change, all men marry believing their wife will never change. For Tom and Katie, marriage is now like a coffin and the kid is just the nail.

Side by side my mind is shocked by the news of the Asiad gold medalist runner Pinki Pramanik whom we all extolled as ‘Golden Girl’. Suddenly her gender identity has come under scanner. Gender identity disorder is a conflict between a person's physical gender and the gender he or she is identified as. How the gender conflict occurs is different in each person. For example, some people may cross-dress while others want sex-change surgery. Some people of one gender privately identify more with the other gender.

Pinki’s problem does not begin with her own choices, but with the manipulation of a neighbouring woman who was tortured by her husband. Pinki took pity on her and asked her to share a room in her spacious apartment. But she started exploiting her. When Pinki protested, she started blackmailing her. The harassment started long ago and now the insult is added to the injury when media and police flanked her all the hours. If Pinki is guilty she should be punished. But why this harassment of a human being with the suspension order, being imposed on her in her railway job.

The hormonal disorder might have denied her both conventional male and femalehood, but the torture is inhuman. The latest update on Pinki makes me sad. The golden girl is now in judicial custody. A West Bengal court Friday rejected the bail plea of Pinki, accused her of being a male although doctors are yet to receive the chromosome and hormone report in full.

An 11-member medical board consisting of doctors from the government-run SSKM Hospital was constituted and conducted several tests on Pinki on June 25. However, due to the lack of facilities, Karyotyping - a choromosomal test - could not be carried out. Still it is our birthright to conclude that Pinki was a cheat and we feel relieved that such a criminal is safely dumped in judicial custody.

The most shocking news however is that Pakistanis consider India bigger threat than Taliban, and Al Qaeda. Only one in five Pakistanis have a favourable view of India. We cannot force the other four to believe otherwise because faith and belief are one’s own. What is the idea of Indians about the Pakistanis? No such survey has yet been made.

The survey of Pakistan by the Pew Research Centre's Global Attitudes Project notes 22 percent of Pakistanis have a favourable view of India. Last year it was 14% and so Pakistanis are changing their stand about Indians. This is indeed a good sign. So Pakistan might have been a haven for terrorists like Osama, Hafiz Saeed or Abu Zindal, Kasab or Dawood Ibrahim, to name only a few, but Pakistanis are not all bad.

I am so surprised that the 26/11 plotter Zabiuddin Ansari aka Abu Jundal has said that LeT chief Hafiz Saeed, one of world's most serious terror threats, is guarded round the clock by Pakistan's security forces and its spy agency, the ISI. This is again a marriage and divorce story. Life is all marriage and divorce story. Only the other day there was Abu Jundal operating from the Karachi control room along with Hafiz Saeed. Today he is in the grip of Indian intelligence agencies. Today he says that there is the honeymoon and marriage relation between ISI and terrorist groups. Probably Abu Jundal has been divorced. Today Pakistan hates nobody more than it hates Abu Jundal who is leaking out the secrets of the ISI and Pakistani designs against India.

As Jeff Douglas said it in the musical Brigadoon: “There's nothing a woman hates more than her fiance's best friend. He knows all the secrets she's going to spend the rest of her life trying to find out.”

Wao musing sir. No single cause can be attiributed to divorce, the autumn raga of life. But marriage is an edifice that is sustained by sacrifice, silence, mutual talk, smile, shunning of ego...not ridding one's hobby horse, supporting each others when time comes. Sadly, something missing there. This has become so common, I often term it as cliche. Love, Marriage, some months after divorce...this has become more or less the norms. Very sad. Rightly said, we can't change the views of the four Pakistanis..rather why should we try. View changes to that side or this side...only time is the crucial factor. Nice article sir. Kudos!
