Anurag Basu and Ranbir Kapoor have already received rave reviews from critics as well as the audience. Barfi marvels and makes one feel good, and inspires us to lose one's worries and live the moment. Barfi is a must-see, for it's a simple yet relatively riveting story with superb acting by Ranbir Kapoor - who with this role in the film has truly arrived!
The portrayal of emotions is never easy, especially on the big screen. Words make it a lot easier as the writer can correctly put across what he wants to say through characters but in Barfi, Basu did not have this advantage. Inspite of that, he did a marvelous job as he put forward the emotions of the three protagonists way better than any words would have done. The proposal scene, the maiden kiss of Barfi and the scene where Barfi is up to his pranks are just gestures and eye movements - yet they are memorable.
The film has a number of emotions and moments strung together, and each frame is neat and adds to the story. The plot itself is not complicated and tells of a sweet love story between three people. Inspite of the simplicity of the theme, it has layers, and the film strives to tell us the complexities of love, and how there is no black or white in love but it is an emotion filled with grey areas.
Ranbir Kapoor as Barfi is a pleasure to watch, and everyone would want such a fun-loving, naughty character in their life as their friend. However, with this role he had every chance of overdoing it but at no point in the film do we feel pity for him or his condition, and if a person who doesn't know Kapoor will indeed believe that he cannot speak in real life. Priyanka Chopra's Jhilmil is sweet and endearing and IIena's character is utterly and completely in love but still misses something in life.
Last but not the least Pritam has done a wonderful job with the music. Right from the title song to all the other numbers, music is the sole language of the film. This weekend don't do anything - just visit the theater if you want to have a sweet, innocent and wholesome Barfi!
