Rape videos on sale in UP: This sums up the mentality of our society
With no decrease in crimes against women, a new disturbing trend in India has been revealed.

In Uttar Pradesh, already infamous for rapes, videos of rapes and gangrapes are being sold in the markets.

As per a report published in Times of India, the clips, which last 30 seconds to five minutes, are being sold in "hundreds, perhaps thousands, every day." The prices of such videos vary between Rs 50 to 150 each, depending on how "exclusive" the video clip is.

"We are aware. We are taking necessary action. But it is difficult, as the sales are happening below the counter," Ajay Sharma, a deputy inspector general of police in the city of Agra, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

A shopkeeper in Agra in Agra told Times of India, "Porn is passe. These real life crimes are a rage."

He added, "Dealers will download videos directly into your smart phone or put them in your pen drive."

The rapists record the video of the crime on their mobile phones and later use it to blackmail the survivor. The video is used to prevent the survivor from lodging a case against the culprits. The culprits can also circulate such videos to take 'revenge' from the survivor or the survivor's family.

In a number of cases, this has also led to the survivor committing suicide. This disturbing trend shows how the mentality of our society is shaping up. This trend has been seen world wide.

Regarding this evolving menace, the Guardian quoted American feminist writer Roxane Gay as saying, "These leaked images are instantly widely available and they always will be. The images will be downloaded and viewed and shared. These women's lives and their private choices will be dissected. They are women, so they must be judged. Lives have been, if not ruined, irreparably harmed, because we are a culture that thrives on the hatred of women."

Lately, the state of Uttar Pradesh has become the hub of sexual crimes against women. In July end, a gang ambushed a car on the Delhi-Kanpur Highway and gangraped the occupant woman and her 14-year old daughter at gunpoint for almost three hours.
