Rapes in India will stop only when people like Mulayam Singh Yadav are punished
More than 15 months have passed since the Nirbhaya Rape happened in the Capital of India and till date not even a single rapist has been hanged to death. There were formal and informal protests by the people, so called NGOs ,social and women activists across the country and the Government had to constitute Justice Verma Committee to review the rape laws in order to ensure that the rape cases are reduced, if not eliminated altogether from the society. Justice Verma Committee completed this formality in the manner and style desired by the Government and suggested some measures without suggesting any time frame for awarding the punishment or death penalty to the rapists.
I have also forwarded certain suggestions to Justice Verma Committee, suggesting specific measures so that rapists are dealt with strictly and awarded punishment in a time bound manner, but as was expected these suggestions were ignored altogether and Government passed the new and modified version of anti-rape laws based on the report drafted and submitted in a hurry by the Justice Verma Committee.

People in our country , just feel offended on the very thought of the punishing the rapists. You will see several advocates, social activists and NGOs coming out openly in support of the rapists on the pretext of human rights violations. When the Nirbhaya case was being contested in the court, there were several advocates competing with each other to defend the accused rapists as if this was a matter of prestige and pride to  defend the rapists. Rapists in the society clearly got encouraged by such things and they infact got motivated to further indulge in such heinous crimes as they clearly see that there are people willing to  support and protect them. The Government also knows this and do not want to punish such supporters of rapists as several politicians belonging to different political parties are also facing rape charges and if the laws are made more strict then these politicians will be in serious trouble.

The so called chief of the so called political outfit Samajvadi Party, Mulayam Singh Yadav recently stated in a  election rally in Moradabad that the rape is a minor mistake  made by the boys and as such these rapists can not be hanged for such minor mistakes. He did not stop here and said further that the rape laws are being misused by the rape victims and therefore, as and when his party will come to power, he will abolish such rape laws. His another party leader Abu  Azmi gone a step further in Mumbai and told that in case of rape, the rape victims should be hanged ,not the rapists. Both Mulayam Singh and Abu Azmi knows very well that there are no laws under which they both can be punished for encouraging the rapists as  our Rape Laws have been drafted in a manner that no matter, how heinous is the rape crime, all efforts should be made to protect the rapists and all the efforts should be made that rape victims are denied justice. If the Nirbhaya Case, which was the most heinous rape crime ever committed in the Country, could not ensure death penalty to all the rapists even after 15 months, what will happen in other thousands of rape crimes, one could easily understand.

Time has perhaps now come to enact a  strict law to punish those criminals in the society, who are not committing the rape themselves but by supporting and protecting the rape criminals, they are encouraging the rapists and therefore, before rapists are dealt with, these supporters and protectors need to be dealt with in a manner that persons like Mulayam singh and Abu Azmi think about thousand times before they come out openly supporting and protecting the rapists.
