Rapist Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh's trial in 2 murder cases begins today
Is Gurmeet Ram Singh alias Ram Rahim a murderer as well? A special CBI court will start his trial in two murder cases today.

As the CBI court prepares to hear the two murder cases against Ram Rahim, the Haryana government has stepped up security across Panchkula to avoid the violence that it faced in the last hearing in which Gurmeet Singh was pronounced guilty of rape and sentenced to jail for 20 years.

Ram Rahim is an accused in two murder cases, one of former Dera chief Ranjit Singh and another of journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati.

To avoid any sort of violence, the state government has deployed contingents of paramilitary forces along with Haryana police and Gurmeet Singh will be attending the proceedings through video conferencing from Sunaria jail in Rohtak, where he is currently lodged.

Gurmeet Singh has been accused of murdering journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati. Chhatrapati is the same journalist who had broken the story of Gurmeet Singh having raped two women in his newspaper 'Poora Sach'.

Chhatrapati had published an anonymous letter narrating the sexual exploitation women faced at the Dera at the hands of Gurmeet Singh. He was later shot at in October, 2002 and later died as a result of the injuries that he suffered.

Dera Chief Ranjit Singh was also murdered in 2002 for allegedly making public the anonymous letter which was published in Chhatrapati's newspaper.

The case has had a long history as any high profile case in India. The families of the victims approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2003 and the High Court ordered a CBI probe. The CBI filed the charge sheet in the cases in 2007 and it has taken a decade for the courts to begin Ram Rahim's trial.

The case is being heard by the same judge, Jagdeep Singh, who had pronounced Gurmeet Singh guilty of rape.
