Reading skills of students at school level have gone much down the optimal level
A number of studies have proved that reading skills of students at school level have gone much down the optimal level and more so in rural schools. Despite that no attention is being paid towards developing and testing reading skills of students.
At higher education level, when one has to rely on self-study and prepare one's own notes, the rural and semi-urban children suffer the most. Keeping this in view, students of a local college in Raipur, which attracts rural students the most, were given seven hour reading skill focused training spread over seven days with one hour of daily practice.

An action research study on the intervention revealed that with a support system of mobilising a team of three teachers and fast learners, fifty-odd students were able to acquire satisfactory reading skills when measured on three-point scale.

Not only the students reacted positively to the intervention, but also demanded that either for revision or preparing notes, once in a week a class-session should be devoted to reading and making notes under the guidance and support of teachers and peer tutors.

I too feel that collective reading with comprehension gets developed better at higher education level with training and application of reading skills coupled with note making. Once purposeful reading habit gets developed, knowledge through information processing seems to be within the reach of students that is also the need of the present day society.

Acquisition of reading skills to aid studies helps students to gain confidence and the ability to work without teachers.
