The US and British troops are now not being killed by the Improvised Explosive Devices. Now an enemy is seen, located and killed. It is the Taliban terrorist who is now on the run.
A YOUNG marine spontaneously said, "We did not join the Marine Corps to sit around". He was excited that the real war was being fought and every US soldier knew that the enamy, that is the radical Taliban had to be vanquished and dissipated. This is precisely what both the British and Americans, supported by the Afghans, are doing. And they are doing well.
It is true that many a time when the sniper fire of the Taliban has been eliminated and the battle-hardened fresh recruits hit the sack after a cold dinner, sleep overtakes everything else. It is the mental and physical tiredness that comes from facing a real enemy in a real war. There is nothing phoney about the massive push to Marjah called Mushtarak or Collective meaning a collective action by the US, British, Canadian and Afghan soldiers to beat the enemies of Afghanistan whosoever they may be. A new development is almost near absence of the blasts and killings due to the IEDs or Improvised Explosive Devices. In the past few days more western soldiers have died of gunshot wounds than of IED inflicted wounds. The reason is - now there is hardly any driving or footslogging along the main roads or principal footpaths. Now the soldiers move cross country along a route charted by their commanders and the enemy does not have even the slightest inkling of it. Consequently, he cannot plant IEDs and inflict morale dampening casualties.
Depression - the word has not been uttered nor heard of since the campaign in Halmand province in Southern Afghanistan started. Generally speaking, it is the boredom and lack of action that causes Depression among active soldiers. Now the active soldiers are more active than ever before. Now there is no fear of the lurking enemy at the corner or the surreptitiously planted IEDs. Now it is an open war and those who plan well and execute the plan with imagination are bound to win. No doubt, no Depression and no Fear of the enemy - all these factors have combined to help the US and British soldiers hold their heads high. Enthusiasm is infectious and the Afghan soldiers of the Afghan National Army have been badly infected by the enthusiasm prevailing in the temporary shelter, on the march or in the live action when bullets fly all over in every direction. No wonder the Taliban is on the run and their commanders are being captured.
