The fourth estate should not give special reports on how Rakhi Sawant and her mother are coming in two different, competing reality shows and at competing time slots at a time when there are pertinent Indian and international issues at hand.
Right now, a large portion of the content on television is in the form of reality shows with dream concepts, be it marriage or handling pressures of parenting or dumping strangers with each other. Channels, producers and participants don’t shy away from trying anything and everything as long as it gives a boost to the TRPs.
Those who produce these shows become famous, those who telecast them become famous, those who participate in them become famous and even those who criticise it become famous. One of the easiest ways to stay in constant limelight is to get related to a reality show. Then, be it Rakhi Sawant as a participant or Baba Ramdev as a criticiser or the MPs as the moral police against these concepts.
However, with the news media joining this bandwagon, with minute updates and reports on various news channels, there is an overdose or overkill of the phenomenon. The fourth estate does not need to give special reports on how Rakhi Sawant and her mother are coming in two different, competing reality shows, on competing channels and at competing time slots. The duo's chronological description is also not warranted at a time when there are pertinent Indian and international issues.
This coverage does not cease here. Instead of details regarding rescue and relief operations in flood affected areas in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, the fourth estate of our society is busy showing how young boys and girls come together on national TV for a month to make the most important decision of their lives - marriage.
Reality TV has already made its mark on Indian television. Therefore, there is no need for the news media to hound after Sawant and her mother or giving special reports on the Baba's rants. Most of us catch these shows and can observe for ourselves what they wear, how they talk and how they plot on national TV. The news media needs to understand this too.
