THE MASTERMIND behind the infamous Red Fort attack in New Delhi that took place in December 22 2000 was sentenced to death by the Supreme Court. Mohd Arif aka Ashfaq, a Lashkar-e-Taiba militant was the key plotter of the attack that left two army personnel dead and another person was killed.

The verdict was earlier challenged Ashfaq. However, a bench of Justice VS Sirpukar and Justice TS Thakur downplayed his appeal, which was given by the sessions court and was seconded by the Delhi High Court.

In its verdict, the Delhi High Court turned down Ashfaq’s plea and added that the capital punishment awarded to him serves his right as he had conspired to wage a war against the state and killed three people, which also included two army personnel and a guard. The jawans were killed when the armed militants stormed into the army supply depot.

However, the trial court also sentenced other co-accused to life imprisonment, which included father son duo Nazir Ahmed Qasid and Farooq Ahmed Qasid and also sentenced Ashfaq’s wife Rehamana Yosuf Farooqui to seven years.
