'Red Gold', an American movie on illegal organ trading shot in India
Michael Keller, an American Indie filmmaker lived a content life making short films in his home town till the day he came across some articles on the global illegal organ trading. Michael was moved by the plight of the poor slum-dwellers, who became victims of this cruel act. A filmmaker to the core, Michael decided to make a movie on the subject.
It took him almost a year to draft the screenplay entirely based in a foreign land. Michael had never been to India before. But, the story required Keller to have a thorough knowledge about the country and its people. From whatever he could gather on the Internet, he learned enough to finish his script.

Financial obstacles

After learning about India, then came the financial challenges. Michael gathered all his savings and decided to self-fund the project, titled Red Gold. He set forth on a mission, with just a goal in mind and no clear plan. He didn’t have any idea about how the Indian film industry functioned as well. There was no scope for strategic planning. But his passion knew no bounds.

So, with all his earnings and a completed screenplay, Michael came to India. The first challenge was to find an accommodation. He couldn’t spend lavishly on it so settled for a PG accommodation. Every penny saved was to go into the movie budget.

Michael teamed up with an Indian Indie filmmaker, Srivinay Salian and together they laid out a plan to execute the film shoot on a strict 10 days schedule and a shoestring budget of less than $10,000.

First, they started the search for a film crew that could help complete the movie. With lots of trial and misses, they met Virendra Rathore,  founder of, who helped them gather a crew equally passionate about the project.

About the Movie

Red Gold is a story of a poor Indian boy, hailing from the slums of Mumbai.  Being the only earning member of the family, he is forced to take care of his alcoholic father and sister. As the financial crisis mounts up and threatens to destroy his family, he is forced to sell his blood and kidney to a local kingpin. When he finds out that the local kingpin has cheated him in the deal, he vows to fight back for his rights and for his survival.

The movie was shot entirely in Vasai, Mumbai. Every hurdle that came in the way was dealt creatively, without losing hope, without getting frustrated, without the option of giving up.

This micro-budget crime drama, written & directed by Michael Keller; co-produced by Srivinay Salian, is now all set to premiere at the Garden State Film Festival in Atlantic City, N.J. on Saturday, April 5, 2014.
