GOING TO a theme park is likely to become a much more invigorating experience in India with Anil Ambani promoted Reliance Big Entertainment (REB) getting in talks with Universal Studios to build a Hollywood theme park in India which will be closely similar to the ones in US, Singapore and Japan which have state of art rollercoaster rides and movie related merchandise.
As per a report, the proposed theme park will be spread across an area of over 400 acres and it will be a huge facility and make it one of the biggest theme parks in the world. The deal is envisaged at about $1.5 billion (approximately Rs 6,900 crores).
For the same, Reliance has got the preliminary nod from the Maharashtra government. The theme park is tipped to be set up in Goregaon, a suburb in Mumbai which also houses Film City.According to Reliance officials, the deal will either be a joint venture or executed by Reliance Big Entertainment. In case of latter, the company may formulate a new arm and pay a certain sum to Universal for using its brand name and using themes such as Jaws and Spiderman.A company official said that the talks are in progress and the entire deal may materialise in the next four months. Along with Hollywood based themes, this may be good opportunity for RBE to show its offerings such as blockbuster hit “3 Idiots” and several other Indian classic movies. The people familiar with the matter say that this might be the right time for Hollywood and its studios to venture into the Indian market as Hollywood movies attract a large number of Indian population and Reliance also stands a good chance of making a good impact in Hollywood.Last year, Reliance Big Entertainment had invested $825 million in the Steven Spielberg promoted studio DreamWorks. With this Ambani brought 50 percent stake in the company for an amount of $325 million. Reliance has already roped in Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Tom Hanks for its movies.
