THE KAPOOR family has been an integral part of the Indian film industry. Raj, Randhir, Rishi, Shammi, Shashi, Karishma, Kareena, and Ranbir are the most well-known Kapoors in the film industry. Undoubtedly, Raj Kapoor tops the list for he was a master of all cinematic trade. He may be remembered mostly as an actor, but he also directed and produced a number of movies. He was born on 14 December 1924 and died on July 2, 1988. Today is his 88th birth anniversary. He has given Indian viewers many memorable moments, which they would never forget.

He made his debut at the age of 11 years, when he played a role in his first movie Inquilab. But, he began to take acting seriously from 1943, when he acted in two movies in the same year, Hamari Baat and Gauri. There was no looking back for this talented actor, who gave some of the best films, such as Mera Naam Joker, Awaara, Shree 420 among a list of many, in his illustrious career to the Indian audience. Apart from this, he has also been a part of some well known songs of the golden generation of Indian cinema.

He acted in a total of more than 60 movies throughout his career. Along with it, he also directed 10 movies and produced 17 movies. In fact, it was movies that he also directed that received huge recognition such as Sangam in 1964, Mera Naam Joker in 1970, Prem Rog in 1982 and Ram Teri Ganga Maili in 1985. Each of these movies received the best movie along with the best Director award during their respective years.

He was one of the best actors of his generation, which can be known from the fact that he won a total of nine Filmfare awards in India. Apart from this, the Indian government also honoured him with a prestigious award, Padma Bhusan Bhusan in 1971 and Dadasaheb Phalke award, 1987. He might not be remembered for his awards, which is part and parcel of an actor's life, but it is the way he brought the screen to life with his acting skills.

Raj Kapoor suffered from Asthma in his later years, which led to his death in 1988. It was a great loss for Indian cinema. During his time, he had a huge fan following and the scenario has not changed much, as far as his popularity goes. The youth of today, when they watch his movies, categorise him in a different class. Shrabani Mukherjee, a movie buff and a fan of Raj Kapoor says, “He stands out, as he was the pioneer showman of Bollywood.”
