Remembering Swami Vivekananda
At a time when India was known mere as a land of starve, poverty, snakes, jungles, slaves and robbers, he presented an unheard side of India at the prestigious Parliament of Religions on September 11, 1893.
ONE OF greatest legends to have ever blessed the Indian soil, Swami Vivekananda was born on January 12 in the year 1863 in Calcutta (now Kolkatta), Bengal Presidency of the British India. He was born into an affluent family, his father Vishwanath Datta had served in Calcutta High Court as an attorney, while his mother Bhuvneshwari Devi was a house wife. It was Bhuvneshwari Devi’s teachings and knowledge that had indubitable impact on the mind and personality of Vivekananada.

He was born Narendranath Datta, in the latter part of his spiritual life, he became popular as Vivekananda. His philosophy, teachings and way of life also had huge impact of another great saint Ramkrishna Paramahamsa. Vivekananda’s towering personality embedded with unmatched knowledge concerning with western and eastern world, spiritualism, Vedas and Geeta made him an iconic figure across the world, including America and England.

At a time when India was known mere as a land of famines, poverty, snakes, jungles, slaves and robbers, he presented an unheard side of India at the prestigious Parliament of Religions on September 11, 1893 and received huge round of applause for his knowledge of spiritualism, Vedanta, Geeta and other religions. His marvellous outlook coupled with brilliant knowledge and  tolerance for all mesmerized whoever came in his contact.

His teachings and philosophy about life are based on rationalisation and reflects Geeta, these have been inspiring millions of youths not only in India but across the world. Many historic figures have also showered praise on saint’s personality and his contribution in building India. Father of nation Mahatma Gandhi, revolutionary leader Subhash Chandra Bose, former president S. Radhakrishnan are some of the icons of India who have had inspiration from Vivekannada.
 
Nobel laureate Ravindranath Tagore had once said on this saint “If you want to know India, study Vivekananda. In him everything is positive and nothing negative." While Mahatma Gandhi wrote Swami Vivekananda's writings need no introduction from anybody. They make their own irresistible appeal."

This great saint of India left for heavenly abode on July 4, 1902, in a fitting tribute to the saint, government of India celebrates his birthday January 12, every year as “National Youth Day”.
