Republic day is celebrated in order to commemorate the date on which the Constitution of India came into force on January 26, 1950. On this day, a grand celebration is held at the Rajpath, in New Delhi, where the President views the parade.

On this day, a grand celebration is held at the Rajpath, in New Delhi, where a parade is held in which participants from defence forces and other state organisations enthrall the audience. The state capitals, various institutions and organisations also have their celebrations to mark the occasion.
In New Delhi, the parade starts from the Raisina Hill near the Rashtrapati Bhavan and ends at Red Fort after passing through Rajpath and India Gate. Before that, the Prime Minister lays a floral wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti followed by two minutes silence in the memory of unknown soldiers.
President of India unfurls the National flag at the main function in the capital with the singing of the National Anthem. A 21-gun salute is given to the soldiers followed by awards like the Ashok Chakra and Kirti Chakra are given away by the President. Thereafter, various regiments of armed forces hold their march past.
Also, cultural floats of several parts of India participate in the parade along with children who win the National Bravery Award for the year. The celebration ends with a fly-past by Indian Air Force jets and helicopters.
