Research reveals the communicative strength of sketch note
A paper validating the communicative strength of sketch note has been accepted for presentation at the upcoming "International Conference on Communication, Culture and Sustainable Development" in February at Aligarh Muslim University in Uttar Pradesh.

"There is no denying the fact that communication plays a central role in the process of human development. Communication for development is about dialogue, participation and the sharing of knowledge and information among people," states the concept note of the conference to be held from February 5 to 7.

The paper titled "Millennium Development Goals vis-a-vis Disability Inclusion: Content Analysis of UN Chief's Report and Its Communication through a Sketch Note" by me is the content analysis of a UN document and its conversion to punch lines and sketch note for communication that combines the text and visuals done with hand.

The search topic for the paper matched with conference which would explore the potential of various communication channels in promoting appropriate cultural values among the people towards achieving the 17 sustainable development goals identified by the UN at the Sustainable Development Summit.

The abstract of the paper goes like this: In the fast developing and moving world sketch notes that combine both text and simple visuals that represent reality are becoming vital tools of communication and interaction.

An attempt was made to create a sketch note after content analysis of the UN Chief's report "Realization of the Millennium Development Goals and internationally agreed development goals for persons with disabilities: a disability-inclusive development agenda". The methodology of the present work was based on the guidelines of Mike Rodhe based on dual coding theory.

A hand written and sketched page was produced as a communication tool for interaction which was validated by three special educators. The content analysis consisted of the phrases which evoked strong mental images and punch lines that created vital messages.

Initially 50 catch phrases and punch lines were identified from the 19-page document which was short listed by five community members and 10 phrases and punch lines were prioritized to create the sketch note which was reviewed by an expressive arts therapist before finalisation.
