Retirement is a chance to de-stress. It gives one the time to rethink and reorganize priorities. A shift in attention from professional image and ability to family and relationships is a good way start this new phase.
WHEN RETIREMENT comes after years of hard work and stress it is hoped that is embraced as a chance to slow down and revaluate priorities. It is expected that one will be freer to support and assist the younger generation in the family to boost up their efforts.
As one settles down and reschedules his/her routine, there is ample time to think what more could be done in this precious life. Remember, all these years that you took reins and commanded a position might have infused you with certain egocentric bias. You may have become prone to thinking of only what affects you directly and ignoring the larger context. Nonetheless, post retirement, amongst many other life-style changes; one should take a more conciliatory approach in easing off the ego that may still be lingering on, to live a happy family life. I can compare this process of easing off the ego to that of stress relieving of steel forgings by leaving them to cool under a controlled temperature to avoid distortions while machining them into precision parts. The sooner one gets rid of this self destructive ego the better.
While each one of us certainly thinks ourselves different, special and unique in our own way, our ego has the need to prove this to everyone. During our serving years the ego may have compelled us to brag, exaggerate, criticise even at the cost of diminishing another’s personality. Ego kept us self centred, made us feel superior to peers and kept us pre-occupied and selfish. The single point agenda in life remained to be in maintaining with the same old egoistic self.
Happy are those, who have been able to adjust in the society by shrinking their egos down to size. But it is not that easy to change one’s attitude towards life. With humility, patience, meditation and yoga one could, however, be in the right direction in easing off the ego. At the same time, it is good to keep ones energy diverted to some other meaningful preoccupation. To get involved in a new discipline needs lot of courage and a great deal of effort.
By indulging and accepting newer challenges in life one is bound to find a great deal of joy and light heartedness. In addition as one gets rid of his/her unwanted ego, one can enjoy and feel interested in other people. What has happened in the past is history, what you can still contribute towards public life would transform you to be a kinder and more generous person. Perhaps, as one lets go the need to impress others and is simply one’s true self, it will get him/her more positive attention than ever before.
.Excellent snd very thought provoking.I think taht aprtfrom loosing Ego, it's time to give some thing to society in return to what it gave to us due to which we could reach this stage.
