SO, THE job of your life is done. You got the golden watch and hugs from your colleagues. Treated like a king for a day. Then what? Some say life begins at 40 but the forties are long gone. The years ahead look dull, cloudy, gloomy. How to spend time now? The time you spent in office is now free. What will you do the next day after you wake up?
Talking to JC Bhatia, a retired government service officer, I found out that giving up on your life after retirement can be the worst experience. You should never feel that you are too old. You should wake up each morning and get ready as usual, then you are active and positive the whole day. If you do not do that and are lazy and unwilling to give your body and mind a healthy exercise then losing faith in life comes pretty naturally.
So, how to spend 24 hours of the day when you think you have practically nothing to do? Here are a few suggestions given by retired people who are living their lives to the fullest!
Music
The best possible way to spend a few hours without even realising where the time flew. Tell your grandchild to download the good old songs of your days and feel twenty five years younger instantly! It is proven that music has a very positive impact on the emotional ups and downs which can be very strong after retirement. Music therapy exists and works. Put a peppy tune in the morning to make you smile and hear it in your head the whole day as you hum it softly and pass it on like an epidemic to anyone who listens to you. The best thing about music is that it is timeless and ageless. Try out some new genres. Maybe you have an ear for hip hop!
Satsang
What is satsang? ‘Sat’ stands for good and ‘Sang’ is company. Satsang can be a kitty party, a poker game or a spiritual gathering. You need good company to spend time with. To talk about anything that interests you. Be it meditation, games, or God. People often misinterpret satsang to be a boring lecture with an old lady preaching about God and ways of the world. But it need not be so. According to Kamla, a regular satsangi, she needs her early morning dose of discussion with her group of ladies who just crave for the same thing and her day goes wonderful after that with her thoughts on what was discussed that day.
Television
That is one technology that you need not be an expert to know. Its called the idiot box but you can’t deny that its one of the most popular and the most sought after time pass of this world. There is something for everyone on the TV, you can watch movies, know the news and most importantly the daily soaps! How can one spend the retired life without them? They are like the king of spending a few hours without knowing where they went. With news you can stay in touch with the world and the happenings around it. With movies you can know how the trends are changing and why your grand daughter is wearing what she is wearing.
Trips
Who doesn’t like adventuring. You are never too old for that. Go out with your spouse. Enjoy nature, the temples, the beach you could even go to a cruise. Try different types of cuisines but don’t forget your digestion. During these trips you should always have your medicine kit so that even a little thing like indigestion does not spoil your fun. Trips neither should be too long nor too short. Five days is ideal if you are not going abroad. Sometimes trips with a group other than your spouse are also pleasurable.
Urmila Bhatia says that she went on a trip to Rajasthan with just women from her satsang. That was one of the most enjoyable trips of her life. If not out of stations small trips like a car ride towards the outskirts of the city and back, or a night of entertainment with your better half, a movie and a dinner. That will be a nice change from the daily routine and so will you be able tackle boredom.
Odd Jobs
Doing odd jobs around the house and also out of it can be a better solution to spending time than watching TV any day. Gardening, touching up patchy paintwork on the doors, giving lessons to children. N K Agarwal, a retired accountant from ICICI bank is now a renowned accounts teacher for standard XI and XII. He says he always wanted to teach and he is fulfilling his dream after retirement. It’s a good idea. You are free, you can do whatever you want or whatever you ever wanted to do in life now. Indira Sharma, a retired Hindi teacher now gives home tuitions as well as she does a lot of social work and goes to villages with an NGO to teach children basic reading and writing there. It’s a fulfilling thing to do as well as spend your time in a fruitful way.
Household chores
Helping your spouse around the house would be a good thing to do. Cook a little something, wash a little something. Take turns in making the bed tea so that just one person doesn’t have to do it and gets cranky about it. Doing it won’t only help you bond better with your partner, but it will also help you remain fit.
Spending time with your spouse
The most important thing is this. Spend the time you spent in work with your spouse. You have all the time in the world now to catch up and know more about each other. Help each other out. Sit in the sun together. Go for morning walks, to the gym, go shopping. You can do whatever you want. Its your life. Turn it into a brilliant experience and show the world that your life actually started after retirement.
